Calexico
United States Port of Entry Calexico

Located 125 miles east of San Diego on the Calexico/Mexico border, this new border station is comprised of five major buildings and several covered inspection areas.

The facility houses administrative offices for I.N.S. and Customs Agents, pedestrian and vehicular inspection facilities, as well as support services for cross border traffic.

To respond directly to its desert setting, and with provisions for energy efficiency, the design concept utilized glass-fiber, tensile roof structures in the main building and primary inspection areas. They cut down on energy expenditure by diffusing sunlight into work areas and public lobbies, and by reflecting radiant heat.

Inspection booths are sited to take advantage of prevailing winds,
mitigating the buildup of vehicular pollutants.

Operating 24 hours a day, the station serves twelve lanes of
non-commercial passenger traffic and has 100 truck docks.
